Business Opportunities

The Hong Kong Government has been investing heavily in the public hospital system. In 2004-2005, the government spent HK$30.2 billion for public healthcare services, 14.4 % of the government recurrent expenditure.

In a report released by the Health and Medical Development Advisory Committee on 20 July 2005, entitled “Building a Healthy Tomorrow”, Dr. York Chow, Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, says that a multipronged approach to sustainable healthcare systems is required.

The report envisages a family healthcare network catering for individual needs while cutting down on unnecessary public hospital visits; a leaner and more focused public hospital sector; better public-private sector co-operation; specialised centres of excellence for cutting-edge medicines; and home care for elderly patients.

The future of Hong Kong healthcare system will be moving towards more active participation from the private and public sectors as well as educating the population in adopting a high degree of health consciousness, healthy lifestyle and taking responsibility of their health.

Birth of an important fair

With the scene set for an upsurge in demand, the medical and healthcare industry now has the ideal platform in Asia with the debut of the Hong Kong International Medical and Health Care Fair in 2006. The fair will be an important platform for the healthcare industry, providing local and international companies with networking opportunities, information exchange, direct interaction between buyers and suppliers and the chance to find new buyers and new business relationships. The fair has a strong synergy of the most relevant healthcare entities. A high level of international and local attendees and leading professionals are expected.

Travelling well

Medical tourism is a boom phenomenon in the travel business. In Asia, destinations such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have all seen an upsurge in this sector. The cost of high-quality
medical treatment in these countries & regions is very competitive and after-care is excellent with high staffing levels and a strong customer-service ethic.

Hong Kong is perfectly positioned to be a leader in medical tourism. Not only is it one of the world's favourite tourism destinations, this modern, efficient city has state-of-the-art medical facilities staffed by world-class professionals. Patients from the Chinese mainland, in particular, will find medical tourism in Hong Kong offers an unbeatable package.

Best of both worlds

Hong Kong, of course, is globally known as a trade fair venue par excellence. It has the added advantage of being the two-way conduit for Chinese mainland business. For international suppliers, Hong Kong provides not only physical proximity to the mainland but also cultural and linguistic affinity to its commercial life. Hong Kong has the experience, the knowledge and the expertise to facilitate entry into the world's fastest growing economy.

Partner in healthy business

Hong Kong has its own robust industry, supplying medical and healthcare equipment to many parts of the world. Its strength is based on Hong Kong's outstanding reputation for efficiency and stringent quality control which has brought Hong Kong manufacturers success as OEM providers. A number of Hong Kong firms also market their own brands. Through Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), certain made-in-Hong Kong medical and healthcare products enjoy zero-tariff access to the Chinese mainland market and this advantage may be shared, in some cases, with Hong Kong company’s overseas business partners. The size and potential of the mainland market make this a very attractive proposition. And it is a consumer market which is growing wealthier by the day. Many mainland consumers are just as affluent and knowledgeable as their neighbours and are seeking new products, services and treatments.

Food for thought

Hong Kong International Medical and Health Care Fair 2006 will run alongside two popular and well-established events. Food Expo and the International Conference & Exhibition of the Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products (ICMCM) attracted over 301,000 and 229,000 public visitors respectively in 2005. The trade hall of the Food Expo and ICMCM also attracted 5,444 and 5,502 trade buyers from all over the world.

Food Expo showcased the products of 17 countries & regions, including health foods and organic products. ICMCM caters to its established traditional markets but also to the rapidly growing interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine in new markets in the west.

Double the energy

Medical professionals have been waiting for an opportunity to see a comprehensive range of equipment, products and services under one roof and to do business at a world-class event. The public will also be able to visit the Hong Kong International Medical and Health Care Fair 2006, providing exhibitors a terrific opportunity to test consumer market response.

Strength in marketing

One of the organisers of the fair is Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), whose reputation as a professional organiser is unchallenged. With over 30 world-class fairs each year, some of them decades old, HKTDC has the infrastructure in place to market this fair worldwide. It makes use of a vast database of international commercial contacts to reach out to buyers far and wide.

The other organiser China Promotion Ltd has organised many medical exhibitions in Shanghai and Vietnam. With offices or representatives in Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Chinese mainland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, USA and Vietnam, the company is equally strong in marketing as well as being a pioneer in exhibitions in the Chinese mainland.

A good dose of information

The fair will have an added dimension of information sharing in its full programme of events. These will include new product launches and demonstrations as well as seminars by industry experts. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to introduce their products at forums open to the public.

There is no better place in Asia to tap into the growing wave of demand for your products and services. Secure your place at the fair now!
