Siemens Medical Solutions
Company Intelligence Report

Company Overview

Siemens Medical Solutions, a division of Siemens, is one of the largest suppliers of healthcare equipment in the world. Siemens' products range from imaging systems for diagnosis and therapy equipment for treatment, to electromedicine and hearing instruments. In addition, the company provides IT solutions that optimize workflow and increase efficiency in hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices. Siemens Medical Solutions is headquartered in Erlangen, Germany.

Siemen's Med generated revenues of E7,422 million in 2003, down 2.6% on the previous year and orders were E7,835 million compared to E8,425 million. Excluding currency translation effects, sales rose 7% and orders increased 3% year-over-year, in part due to continued growth in the highly competitive U.S. market. Med increased its Group profit by 10%, to E1.118 billion, and its Group profit margin climbed above 15% for the fiscal year

Siemens Medical Solutions offers medical imaging systems, including X-ray, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and ultrasound devices; IT systems to facilitate the digital storage, retrieval and transmission of medical images and other clinical and administrative information; oncology care systems; and hearing aids. This report provides a full review of the company's activities.

Headquartered in Erlangen, Germany, Siemens Medical Solutions offers medical imaging systems, including X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), mammography, angiography, ultrasound and molecular imaging products, as well as related computer-based workstations, healthcare IT systems, oncology care products and audiology products such as hearing aids. Siemens also has a 35% share in Dräger Medical, which offers electromedical systems, including patient monitoring products, life support systems and electrophysiological measuring systems.

Siemens Medical Solutions claims to be the global market leader for healthcare IT solutions and hearing systems, and to hold a leading or second position in the market for diagnostic imaging products, along with GE Healthcare and Philips.

To round out its nuclear medicine business and expand in the rapidly-growing market for molecular imaging, the company acquired its former partner, CTI Molecular Imaging, in 2005. CTI was merged with Siemens’s existing activities to form a new Molecular Imaging division in 2005. CTI claimed to be the world's leading provider of PET imaging equipment and services. In addition, Siemens enhanced its ultrasound capabilities in 2005 through the acquisition of Sensant and its Capacitive Microfabricated Ultrasound Transducer (CMUT) technology. This technology is expected to improve volumetric 4D imaging, broaden the frequency range and increase image resolution, allowing clinicians to examine microscopic detail within conventional and 4D ultrasound images. Siemens plans to integrate this technology into its complete suite of ultrasound systems and expects the technology to be commercially available within two to three years.

Siemens Medical Solutions’s sales rose by 8% per cent to EUR 7.6 billion, led by revenue from diagnostic imaging solutions, helped by the launch of new products and applications, as well as the acquisition of CTI Molecular Imaging. The company also got off to a strong start in fiscal 2006, achieving sales growth of 20% to EUR 2 billion in the first quarter, driven by growth for all modalities in diagnostic imaging, including 24% for MRI systems, 14% for molecular imaging and 14% for CT.

Its medical imaging operations are the largest part of Siemens’s medical business, representing about two-thirds of operations. This business is organised into divisions according to the type of system offered, including Magnetic Resonance, Computed Tomography, Ultrasound, Angiography, Fluoroscopic and Radiographic Systems, Molecular Imaging and Special X-ray Systems. The Health Services division, which focuses on IT systems, represents the second-largest part of the business.
