UK medical systems industry
--Increasing presence in the global market by UKTI
Overview
Situated in a unique marketplace, in which one of the key drivers is the National Health Service, the UK medical systems industry serves the needs of an increasingly health-aware population. The Sector exports around £8 billion worth of goods and services annually into a global market that is growing rapidly, as individual expectations rise, and political pressure grows in many countries to improve services and facilities.
The National Health Service is one of the world's best healthcare brands and acknowledged worldwide as a benchmark of excellence. It is an enormous organisation employing 1.5m people, making it the third largest employer in the world, with an annual budget of £40 thousand million. The NHS is not only an originator of know-how recognised the world over; it is also an exacting buyer.
The UK medical systems industry's total annual production in 1995 was £2.7 billion, representing nearly 0.8% of total UK manufacturing output. Total exports in 1995 were over £1.5 billion, accounting for almost 60% of output. One of the UK industry's primary sectors, single use disposable products, accounts for an estimated 25% of the total market worldwide. The UK's increasing presence in the global market has been attributed to three main factors: complementary relationships between the industry, the Government, the NHS, the private sector and voluntary organisations; a highly developed healthcare infrastructure; and an outstanding and well-supported research base.
Non-clinical consultancy covers activities a multitude of activity, ranging from advising governments on how to structure their health services, to assessing the impact of non clinical programmes such as education for preventing the spread of AIDS, to implementing telemedicine services, and to using models based on the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to fund hospital construction. As well as working closely with the British Government and the NHS in the UK, British consultants have worked in nearly every country of the world. The NHS has developed internationally recognised qualifications and standards of competence for all the professions associated with the provision of health services. NHS staff are able to meet and maintain these standards through education and training programmes provided by leading academic institutions which contract with the NHS. All training, and NHS training establishments, are monitored by professional bodies. The UK's philosophy on education and training is focused on developing a country's own human resources by working to develop a future self-sufficiency of local skills. Many universities, medical schools, NHS training institutions and colleges of higher education support international training. Options include access to UK based education and training programmes; development of specialist training capability in the home country, to local standards; appraisal missions to assist countries with identification of appropriate and cost-effective training; and IT and distance learning-based training.
